Joi Brown

Joi Brown is the director of the Jefferson County Memorial Project, a grassroots coalition of 35 community partners committed to researching Jefferson County’s 33 documented lynching victims and educating the public about the importance of this history. She says her call to action to do this work was her discovery, while walking through the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in 2018, that her own grandfather, Matt Brown, was lynched in Blount County in 1891. This discovery—and finding newspaper articles with hate-filled descriptions of lynching victims—intensified her resolve to increase awareness of the real history of racial terror in Alabama.
