Kimberly McNair

Kimberly McNair

Kimberly McNair is a sister of Denise McNair, one of the four little girls who were killed in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham on September 15, 1963. Denise was the only child of Chris and Maxine McNair at the time of her death; Kimberly and her sister Lisa were born later. Although the McNairs’ sorrow about Denise kept them from talking extensively about the murder or even about Denise herself, Kimberly and Lisa learned about Denise’s personality from other family members, particularly their grandmother, who showed them a box of items saved from the day of the bombing: Denise’s patent leather purse, coins, a shoe, and the rock that had been embedded in Denise’s head by the blast of the bomb. Family members described Denise as lively, lovable, fun, and always a fighter for the underdog.
