Dorothy Tuck

Dorothy Tuck

Dorothy Tuck is a descendant of Susan Embry (her great-great-great grandmother), who was one of six slaves owned by Elijah Embry in Lincoln, in Talladega County, Alabama in the early-to-mid 1800s. Susan lived all her life, even after emancipation, with the Embry family, along with her son Gabriel, who was born around 1823 and, according to family lore, was fathered by a white man. While researching her family history, Dorothy came across a book by Barbara Bonfield, who had discovered that her ancestor Elijah Embry owned six slaves in Lincoln in the early 1800s; at the Talladega County Courthouse Barbara found Elijah Embry’s 1862 will, listing Susan and Gabriel, by name, among his slaves. This discovery prompted Dorothy to call Barbara Bonfield, to discuss their intertwined family histories; their conversation led to a long friendship and a poignant journey into their shared family histories, which they are now sharing with others.
