Rev Joseph Ellwanger

Rev. Joseph Ellwanger was the white pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Birmingham’s Titusville community during the turbulent 1960s; his gospel-centered faith led him to work toward justice and equality for African Americans during a nine-year period of service that coincided with some of the most dramatic events of the modern civil rights movement in Birmingham and Alabama. From the Birmingham desegregation campaign of 1963 to the Dallas County courthouse protest of voter intimidation in 1965, his courage and activism garnered meetings with Alabama’s Governor Wallace and President Lyndon B. Johnson, earned the consternation of white southern Lutheran leaders, and threatened the safety of his family and church.
