Patricia Gaines

Patricia Gaines is an artist and educator who was born and raised in Selma during the era of segregation in the 1940s and 1950s. Her father was a Methodist minister whose liberal views on race—that people of all skin colors should be welcomed into the church—were threatening to local people and to church leaders; in 1961, her family was run out of Selma by the Klan. Her art chronicling her childhood was featured in an exhibit titled “Preacher’s Daughter” in Selma in 2024. Her past exhibits include installations in New York, Los Angeles, New Zealand, and Nova Scotia, and her list of private collectors includes Jeff Bridges, Sally Field, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, and Ethan Hawke.
