Noah Duffy and his friend Carey Fountain are Birmingham artists who founded the Black Cherry Tree Project, a community arts project that seeks to create conversations about racial reconciliation through art. Their initial goals are to memorialize Jefferson County’s 33 lynching victims by planting 33 black cherry tree saplings across Birmingham, each honoring an individual victim. They also want to engage local artists working in all media—from music, dance, and theatre to poetry, painting, sculpture, even needlepoint—to draw people into safe, sacred gathering sites where they can learn about racial tensions and racial history through participatory art.
