J Mason Davis

J. Mason Davis grew up in Alabama during segregation, went to law school at New York University, and became the first African American partner in a major law firm in Birmingham. He recalls the challenges of going to law school in the 1960s due to Alabama’s system of actually paying African Americans to go to professional schools outside of the state in order to avoid having to integrate the state’s professional schools. He also recalls the obstacles to African American voter registration during that time, even for a law school graduate.
