Charles Gaines

Charles Gaines is an American author who grew up in segregated Birmingham during the 1940s and 1950s. As the child of a privileged white family, he remembers his parents as “polite segregationists” who treated their Black servants well but adhered to the social strictures that separated the races during that era. As he grew older, he rejected his family’s white supremacist views and, as a student at Birmingham-Southern College in the 1960s, he supported the protests during the Civil Rights Movement. He is the author of numerous fiction and non-fiction works, including the novel and film script for Stay Hungry, which was filmed in Birmingham.
