Howell Raines

Howell Raines is an American journalist, editor, and author who grew up in segregated Birmingham during the 1940s and 1950s. He was executive editor of the New York Times from 2001 to 2003 and has published two memoirs, an oral history of the civil rights movement, a novel, and a history of soldiers from Alabama who fought for the Union. In 1992, he published a Pulitzer Prize-winning essay, “Grady’s Gift,” about his childhood in Birmingham and his close relationship with his family’s Black housekeeper.
