Thomas Noon

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Thomas Noon took a year off from college to intern at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Birmingham’s Titusville community, at the invitation of its pastor, Rev. Joseph Ellwanger. Though he had had little interaction with African Americans before, he lodged with a family of the church and the congregation embraced him. As youth minister during that time—at the height of the fight for racial equality in Birmingham—Rev. Noon led the church’s participation in canvasing the community for voter registration and protests at city hall for jobs and integration. He later returned to the church, where he served as senior pastor for more than 30 years.
