Roosevelt Johnson

Roosevelt Johnson was raised in a large family near Center Street and 6th Avenue South in Birmingham’s Titusville community. As a lifelong member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church, he has vivid memories of the church and its members’ involvement in the civil rights struggle under iconic pastor Nelson H. Smith, Jr., who co-founded the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights with Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. His employment as a milkman for White Dairy Co., a U. S. Postal Service worker, and court constable afforded him an up-close and personal perspective on the community and its residents.
