U W Clemon

U. W. Clemon is a former U.S. District Judge—and Alabama’s first black district judge—who was a civil rights attorney during the late 1960s and 1970s and also a leading activist while he was a student at Miles College in the early 1960s; he was called an “outside agitator” by Bull Connor because he was the voice of the Miles students who participated in the selective buying campaign in Birmingham in 1962. He also has memories of attending services and interracial meetings at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham.
