Juanzetta Flowers

Juanzetta Flowers is the widow of Charles Flowers, a white physician who became chair of UAB’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the 1960s and worked to integrate the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology facilities and provide equal obstetrics care to all women giving birth there. Juanzetta, a nurse, recalls the deplorable condition of the “colored” maternity ward at the time and the racial barriers to health care for African-American women.
