Darlena King

Darlena King grew up in Birmingham in a sheltered and protected family environment; at eight years old in 1963, she had little awareness of the transformative events that ignited Birmingham that year. When she reached high-school age, she entered all-Black Hayes High School, but the following year, she was mandated to attend mostly white Woodlawn High School, where she encountered animosity from white students and low expectations from white teachers. She says she often sat in class thinking, “they just don’t know who we are; they just don’t know our abilities.”
