Charles Avery Jr.

Charles Avery, Jr., grew up in Ketona, a small community on the north side of Birmingham, and was active in the Children’s Crusade in in 1963. He is best known for his role in leading more than 800 student marchers from Hooper City High School to downtown Birmingham to protest racial segregation during the crusade. Avery’s activism was largely driven by witnessing the inequities and absurdities of the voter registration process for Blacks in the early 1960s, particularly the obstacles his father overcame in gaining the right to vote. His family’s stories are featured in a 2020 UAB Reporter story and chronicled in detail in a book written by his daughter, Dina Avery: Jumping the Train: An Extraordinary True Story.
