Janice Houston Nixon

Janice Houston Nixon was only eight years old in 1963 when she joined her family in the marches that brought dramatic change to Birmingham and the nation. Her sister Carolyn and brother James were both jailed during the Children’s Crusade. Inspired by their foot-soldier mother, Marie Montgomery, Carolyn integrated Ensley High School and became the school’s first Black graduate, with honors.
