Tamara Harris Johnson

Tamara Harris Johnson and her family moved to Birmingham in 1961, when she was eight years old; they soon settled into a close-knit, segregated community in what has been referred to as “Dynamite Hill” because of the number of bombings the in the 1950s and 1960s. The neighborhood was one of several well educated, middle class Black communities that were full of professionals who worked hard and lived well, in spite of segregation. The Harris family were friends with three of the families of the four girls who were killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, and Tamara remains friends with many of the survivors. She was among the first African Americans to integrate Ensley High School.
