Katherine Ramage

Katherine Ramage was 11 years old in 1963, when African Americans were attempting to integrate white churches in downtown Birmingham. Her father, Rev. Edward Vandiver Ramage, minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, opposed segregation and arranged for two young Black women to attend his church on Easter Sunday in 1963. As a result, he was accused of being a Communist and was bullied by the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups. He faced death threats, as well as threats to his children, ad harassment by members of his congregation. He left Birmingham with his family in late 1963.
