Mike Diccicco

Mike Diccicco attended Catholic elementary and high school in Birmingham in the 1960s. Shortly after the Civil Rights Act was signed in 1964 and the “colored to the rear” signs came down, he remembers boarding a bus and seeing a group of whites standing in front of the bus to avoid “sitting next to a Negro.” When he sat down next to a Black man, he remembers “every white head turning in my direction and staring at me.”
