Geraldine Carter

From her home on 2nd Street South in Birmingham’s Titusville community, Geraldine Carter watched out for her neighbors, including the congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and she saw the drama unfold around the church during the 1960s under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Ellwanger. Rev. Ellwanger was a transformative civil rights activist whose work with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.—on the Central Committee that planned the Birmingham Campaign of 1963 and demonstration for voting rights in Selma in 1965—led to passage of landmark federal legislation for racial equality.
